More and more professionals are struggling with stress, burnout, anxiety and confidence issues, particularly in relation to the workplace. This has a major impact on their health, life quality but of course also performance. The World Health Organisation states that an estimated 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression. They furthermore estimate that the impact on the global economy due to lost productivity from depression and anxiety alone amounts to US$ 1 trillion per year. These are staggering figures. And the issue is often underestimated by companies as there is a stigma associated with mental health issues. Mental health training programs run by companies and organizations could make all the difference.
It is really important that organisations take active steps promoting the mental health in the workplace. In fact, many companies already make mental health interventions part of an integrated health and well-being strategy. Those usually cover prevention, early identification, support and rehabilitation. It is particularly important to provide the knowledge around those often tabu topics. By doing this we are able to prevent but also to be the right support for team members who are struggling. Furthermore, it is important to create a climate of openness and support around these topics. It can make all the difference not to feel isolated if you suffer from a mental health issue.
